Annie checked the clock on her office wall at least once every ten minutes, but the hands seemed to drag themselves around the dial. She’d never seen a day go by so slowly. Every few minutes she would find herself wondering what Bella was doing...if she was having fun...if she was missing Annie. In the very next second, Annie would tell herself to get used to it. If things went as Gray wanted them to, she could be spending the rest of her life doing the same thing. And she’d be doing it alone.

The thought drove her crazy. She’d tried to explain the emotion to Gray in the park, but it had been hopeless. He just didn’t understand.

To keep some portion of her sanity intact, she returned to the half-painted living room and began to paint once more. As the afternoon progressed and she got more and more of the color of the walls, the room took on a honey-tinged glow that would be perfect for the upcoming wedding. Annie barely noticed, though. She’d been able to think of only one thing besides Bella for the last few hours, and the picture in her mind was haunting. She couldn’t dislodge the image of a little boy, a lock of black hair falling over his forehead, his dark eyes confused and upset. How in the world could Gray’s parents have been so selfish? Were people really like that? Did parents actually do that sort of thing?

She dipped her brush back into the bucket and told herself they did. The newspapers were full of stories about people who did that—and much much worse—but it was so sad! She remembered the look in his eyes when he’d handed Bella the watch. So earnest, so caring. With a start, she realized she was thinking about everything he’d done and said in the past few days. He would be a good father... and another piece of her heart broke off and shattered.

By a quarter till three, when Gray stuck his head inside the living room and said, “It’s time for you to go get Bella,” Annie was a complete wreck. He didn’t seem to notice, though, because he wasn’t much better. The tie that was knotted at his neck was skewed to one side, and there were lines radiating like fans from the corners of his eyes. He held his briefcase in a death grip. Suddenly, incredibly, she found herself speaking.

“Would you like to go with me?” She regretted the words the instant they escaped, but it was too late to take them back.

Gray’s eyes locked on hers, a flash of surprised gratefulness sparking in their depths before he hid it. “Yes—I’d like that very much.”

Ten minutes later, just as Annie and Gray pulled up to the school, children poured out of the doors like a rush of water. Parking against the curb, both of them got out of the car. Before they could go forward, Bella spotted them and came running toward them. In her hands she clutched a sheet of wrinkled paper.
